Great product, but very expensive-- here's an alternative.

Hi folks, I purchased a property that had some mold issues, and the name Concrobium came up a number of times. When I investigated further, people on the do-it-yourself forms mentioned the main ingredient was washing soda. After doing some further investigation I found a couple of homemade recipes and tried them.

For the area that I needed to treat in my house I could have easily spent $150 on what I needed of the Concrobium product, but instead spent under five dollars.

So, the solution is 2 teaspoons per quart of Washing soda ( available at the supermarket with other detergents), and then 1/8 teaspoon of trisodium phosphate (TSP). This is available at Home Depot and other hardware stores, and is used as a cleaner or paint preparation. Just look in the paint section at HD. Both of these are very inexpensive. Under $10 for both, and you could make 50 gallons or more of mold control.

As a test, I had a really nasty smelling instrument case that was left in my basement. Very strong pungent mildew smell-- like ready for the dump kind of smell. I sprayed on my homemade mixture, and let it sit overnight. The next morning the smell was completely gone. After a month, the smell is still not back, so save yourself some dollars and mix up your own brew!

I'm not knocking this Concrobium product at all, it works, and is convenient. But if you want to save some money, mix up your own. This company is making a huge amount of profit on something that cost pennies per qt. to make.

DO NOT LISTEN TO THE ONE STAR REVIEW. Total bunk there. The product has more than just washing soda in it that works to kill mold. I had a major mold issue in my home after a water heater leak and several days of 100 degree weather. Knowing that bleach is not only toxic but does not kill mold, I sought a different solution. Bought the gallon of Concrobium along with a spray bottle of the same. Sprayed this product on everything that was not removed (removed sheetrock, baseboards, flooring) or could be thrown away (threw away books, carpets, misc stuff I really didn't need). Fogged the garage. Cleaned the interior slab with it. 5 months later, none of the mold has reappeared. No odor but I would hesitate to say to spray or fog without respirator. Time will tell if this product continues working. I will try to remember to post again next summer for further review.

UPDATE: It has been over 4 years since using this product and it was successful at keeping the mold away. I must point out that I also made sure that the moisture issue was taken care of plus I used another product to seal the wood that was treated. If moisture is continuous where Concrobium is used (as in a shower) then it won't continue to work. Please be sure to follow the manufacturer's directions. I still highly recommend the product.

I just HAD to write a review for this product... I recently moved into a rental in Portland that was built in the 60s which is AWESOME but the very strong musty smell that was in the hallway and kitchen was driving me absolutely nuts. I tried several different things and none of them seemed to really help. They sell this product at Home Depot for about $9 and after being told by the salesgirl that "contractors and builders buy this stuff by the gallon" I was up for trying it. It is truly UNBELIEVABLE. First of all, it can be used on any surface, from solid non-porous to fabric which many of these cleaners can't. It's not toxic, no bleach, and in fact smells like nothing at all, no chemicals, no nasty flowery smell to cover up chemicals - I felt like I was using water it was that odorless. I sprayed it down around the baseboards (on the drywall and wood) around windowsills, etc. where I thought the mildew was probably getting in. I could tell the musty odor was disappearing right away. I woke up this morning and my cute little apartment smells like NOTHING. Absolutely nothing. I'm seriously in a state of shock right now. I'm going to do a second coat today (which they recommend to create a barrier to prevent future issues) Pros: Doesn't have an odor of it's own, spray it and forget it - no scrubbing or wiping necessary, removes odor immediately, first treatment to kill mold/mildew and second treatment to prevent future problems which is great. Cons: None whatsoever. I really don't know why some people didn't love this product, I have no idea what their situation is. But if you have mold/mildew anywhere in your house and a nasty musty smell that makes you want to cry... this might be best 9 bucks you ever spend. I would have gladly paid 10 times that much for what it's done for my apartment. If there was a way to give this more than five stars I would - ten out of five stars!!

I just moved into an apartment and my bathroom does not have a window. I have a wood medicine chest and the smell coming from it was terrible. It literally made my throat hurt. I didn't really want to spend 8 bucks, but since this was the only cleaner that could be used on wood I splurged. Totally worth it. I wore a mask to clean so I cannot comment on the product's smell. I can say that the moldy smell in my bathroom disappeared. Great product.
